Item Description:

Science Court Sound is part of the Science Court Series published by Tom Snyder/ Scholastic. Science Court Sound is perfect for students in 4th through 6th grades.

In Science Court Sound: Sasha Meany hires Shep Sherman to fire the town cannon precisely at midnight to kick off the town's 200th anniversary celebration. When the cannon blast is late, Sasha accuses Shep of ruining the festivities. Did Shep fire the cannon too late? Or is there something special about the way sound works?

Over the course of the trial, students will learn:

  • How vibrating objects create sound
  • How sound waves travel through the air and other material
  • Why sound takes time to travel
  • How to set up experiments to: Create and observe how vibrations make sound waves, compare how sound waves travel through different materials, Calculate how fast sound travels, Evaluate several variables that affect how sound travels

Students are also introduced to the following content vocabulary, visually defined in the Word Wall:

  • Amplitude
  • Echo
  • Frequency
  • Instantaneous
  • Material
  • Particles
  • Pitch
  • Sound waves
  • Synchronize
  • Vibration
