Item Description:

Science Court: Particles in Motion is part of the Science Court Series published by Tom Snyder/ Scholastic. Science Court Particles in Motion is made specifically for grades 4 through 6.

J.C. Cramwood commissions local artist Sonya Sondheim to create a huge plaque in his honor. At the unveiling ceremony, the plaque pops out of its frame and falls right onto Cramwood. He then claims that Sonya didn't secure the plaque well enough in its frame. Sonya insists that her frame fit the plaque perfectly. Could something else have caused the plaque to fall out of its frame?

Over the course of the trial, students will learn:

  • That every object is made up of tiny particles
  • What condition might cause the particles in an object to move further apart
  • What condition might cause the particles in an object to move closer together
  • That different kinds of atoms combine to make different things
  • How to set up experiments to: Demonstrate that solid objects are made up of smaller particles, Observe how heat makes those particles move faster and further apart and compare how different materials behave when heated
  • How to work as a team by: becoming members of an interdependent group, listening and talking with others and sharing a common goal

Students are also introduced to the following content vocabulary, visually defined in the Word Wall:

  • Atoms
  • Characteristics
  • Conduction
  • Contract
  • Element
  • Expand
  • Materials
  • Matter
  • Molecules
  • Particles
  • Rate
  • Thermal energy
  • Thermostat

The Science Court Series Builds a lasting understanding through guided discussion and fun, hands-on learning. Science Court Series offers a research-based way to introduce core science topics and model scientific processes in the classroom for grades 4 to 6

Science Court directly challenges common misconceptions in earth, life, and physical science topics. Students critically examine the facts, articulate their understanding in multiple ways, and perform hands-on experiments to predict the trial decisions and final verdict. This engaging, research-proven approach will help your students build lasting understanding in science while fully engaging them with the humor of Science Court
