Item Description:

Science Court: Inertial is part of the Science Court Series published by Tom Snyder/ Scholastic. Science Court Inertia is a Fun way for students in grades 4 through 6 to learn all about motion.

Cramwood, the famous motion picture star, accuses his old friend, Jenkins, of selling him a BAAD bike accessory that whacks him in the head. Is Jenkins trying to make Cramwood look bad?

Over the course of the trial, students will learn:

  • How to demonstrate Newton's first law of motion
  • Why some objects have more inertia than others
  • How inertia relates to the importance of wearing a seat belt in a moving car
  • Examples of forces that get objects moving and that slow them down
  • How to set up experiments to: observe the effects of inertia on an object inside a moving vehicle, explore the effect of friction on a moving object and observe the relationship between mass and inertia
  • How to work as a team by: becoming a member of an interdependent group, listening and talking with others and sharing a common goal

Students are also introduced to the following content vocabulary, visually defined in the Word Wall:

  • 1st Law of Motion
  • Acceleration
  • Force
  • Friction
  • Interia
  • Issac Newton
  • Mass
  • Motion
  • Object
  • Surface
  • Velocity

The Science Court Series Builds a lasting understanding through guided discussion and fun, hands-on learning. Science Court Series offers a research-based way to introduce core science topics and model scientific processes in the classroom for grades 4 to 6

Science Court directly challenges common misconceptions in earth, life, and physical science topics. Students critically examine the facts, articulate their understanding in multiple ways, and perform hands-on experiments to predict the trial decisions and final verdict. This engaging, research-proven approach will help your students build lasting understanding in science while fully engaging them with the humor of Science Court

    STATE AND NATIONAL STANDARDS
    Your students will:

    • Use scientific processes and hands-on experimentation to break down students' persistent misconceptions in science
