Item Description:

Science Court: Fossils is part of the Science Court series. Science Court Fossils is published by Tom Snyder/ Scholastic and is available in many different configurations to fit your needs.

In Science Court Fossils: while protesting the construction of another Planet Cramwood, Jack Jenkins discovers a fossil at the construction site. The construction will have to be halted, if the fossil is really a fossil and actually came from that site. Cramwood and his attorney, Doug Savage, accuse Jenkins of planting a fake fossil and take him to Science Court. Is the fossil really a fossil? Will more fossils likely be found at the site?

Over the course of the trial, students will learn:

  • How fossils are formed
  • About different kinds of fossils
  • How fossils can teach us about the past
  • What conditions are necessary for fossilization to occur
  • How to set up experiments to: Demonstrate the process of petrification, demonstrate how cast and mold fossils are formed, and demonstrate how trace fossils are formed
  • How to work as a team by: becoming members of an interdependent group, listening and talking with others and sharing a common goal

Students are also introduced to the following content vocabulary, visually defined in the Word Wall:

  • Cast fossil
  • Cell
  • Conditions
