What is the Indian Education program?
The Indian Education program supports the efforts of school districts, Indian tribes and organizations, postsecondary institutions, and other entities to meet the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of American Indian students so that they can meet the same challenging state student academic achievement standards as all other students.

Formula grants are given to school districts and Bureau of Indian Affairs-operated or supported schools based on the number of Indian children and the state’s per-pupil expenditure for education.

What is the Native Hawaiian Education program?
The Education of Native Hawaiians program develops innovative educational programs to provide additional services that address the educational needs of Native Hawaiian children.

The U.S. Department of Education makes competitive awards to eligible applicants.
How can Native Hawaiian Education funding be used?
In awarding grants or contracts, the Department of Education will give priority to projects that address:
• Beginning literacy skills in children in grades kindergarten through third
• The needs of at-risk children and youth
• Needs in fields or disciplines in which native Hawaiians are under-employed
• The use of the Hawaiian language in instruction
