What is the Rural and Low Income Schools Program?
The Rural and Low-Income School Program is designed to provide additional funds to rural school districts that serve concentrations of poor students. This program:
• Requires adequate yearly progress
• Establishes education goals
• Requires an annual progress report.
How is Rural and Low Income Schools Program funding distributed?
• State Education Agencies (SEAs) receive grants from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) based on their share of all the students in eligible districts in the country.
• The states are responsible for distributing funds to school districts.
• The districts, in turn, allocate funds to individual schools.
How can Rural and Low Income Schools Program funding be used?
Grant funds from the Rural and Low-Incomes School program may be used for:
• Programs to help students that are risk of not meeting state academic standards
• Teacher professional development, including programs with an emphasis on technology
• Educational technology, including software and hardware
• Programs aimed at helping limited English proficient and immigrant students
• Safe and drug free schools activities
• Teacher recruitment and retention
• Parental involvement activities
